I absolutely loved this book as a child, and still do. My kids loved it, too. It's a well-researched account of Norse mythology--wonderful stories of dwarves and dragons and giants.
I would not recommend this particular printing of the book. The cover and pictures inside are nice and the other reviewers covered the content, but the print on page is poor. The margin around the printed page is very small and the text practically runs into the spine of the book making it very hard to read. Some of the letters on words next to binding are cut off or missing. I wouldn't recommend this printing of this book at all.
As a person of Norwegian descent, I have always identified with the Norse. I even find some people I have done business with refering to me as Brad the Viking. Maybe my barrel chest and flowing gold locks aid in this, still...
But I found when it came down to it, all I KNEW about Norse mythology was Thor, Odin, Valhalla, and Loki. And my details on much it it - fuzzy at best.
So when I came across a few books of Norse Mythology in a box of books I was cleaning out for my girlfriends mom, I had to lay claim to them, and now I am workingm y way through them. This one was first.
This particular tome is aimed more at middle school children, but is fairly extensive in at least the tales it tells are many. I am sure anything risque or too violent was glossed over, and the stories are presented in a narritive tone that often over does the foreshadowing. Still for someone like me without a strong backgroung in the subject matter, it was probly just about right. Printed in 1930 by Houghtin Mifflin, this alos came with 5 or 6 illustrationns to inform the tales. Though rich and vibrant for line drawings in black ink with some shading, they didnt do too much to increase my opinion of the lore, but they wee still neat and VERY period, to the time of printing.
It is hard to recomend this book, as I doubt you could find a copy if you tried, still I will, if you are interested, or curious about Norse Mythology, and want to see what it is all about, before you lay down bigger money for fancier, more expensive books on the matter. Now that I say that, I checked, and actually has this edition for 4 or 5 dollars, so I can recomend this book outright. This book makes a nice incline plane to ease you into the waters or Norse Myths. So see if you feel at home in there, and if you are like me, dive on in.
The 1930s reprint edition of this book was a staple of my childhood, circa 1961 or so; but it was lost over the decades during several cross-country moves. Recently I managed to find another 1930s copy of that hardcover edition ... and to my delight, it remains just as enthralling & exciting now. While there's certainly an element of nostalgia at play here, I find that the old-fashioned style of storytelling for younger readers is charming in itself. And the equally old-fashioned illustrations only add to the pleasure of re-reading these stories again.
So, here are the classic tales of the Norse gods, from the beginnings of the world to the anticipation of Ragnarok, in which that world must finally perish (and give birth to another, newer world). That beginning is described in lovely, handcrafted prose that was originally written in 1902
"Heat and cold met and strove to destroy each other, as they have tried to do ever since. Flaming sparks from the hot world fell upon the ice river which flowed from the place of cold. And though the bright sparks were quenched, in dying they wrought mischief, as they do to-day; for they melted the ice, which dripped and dripped, like tears from the suffering world of cold. And then, wonderful to say, these chilly drops became alive; became a huge, breathing mass, a Frost-Giant with a wicked heart of ice. And he was the ancestor of all the giants who came afterwards, a bad and cruel race."
From here the story launches into the mythic world of the Aesir Odin, Thor, Loki, and all the varied gods & monsters of the North. The characters are drawn in bold, basic strokes, as in this description of Thor discovering that his magic hammer Miolnir is missing
"Thor darted his flashing eye into every corner of Cloud Land in search of the hammer. He called to his fair wife, Sif of the golden hair, to aid in the search, and his two lovely daughters, Thrude and Lora. They hunted and they hunted; they turned Thrudheim upside down, and set the clouds to rolling wonderfully, as they peeped and pried behind and around and under each billowy mass. But Miolnir was not to be found. Certainly, some one had stolen it.
"Thor's yellow beard quivered with rage, and his hair bristled on end like the golden rays of a star, while all his household trembled."
Yes, this is for younger readers ... but it holds up very well for being more than a century old now. I'm enjoying these stories all over again, and I'm happy to add this book to my shelves once more -- highly recommended!
